2009 Uspga Championship

2009 USPGA Championship Review

As always the the USPGA Championship was the last Golf Major of the season with the 91st tournament being played at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, the tournament was certainly an exciting one and for the second Major of the year a rank outsider won his fist Major here to follow Lucas Glover at the 2009 US Open.

Tiger Woods made an excellent start to the final Major of the year as he went searching for Major number 15 to his collection, Woods shot a 67 to leave himself at -5 and one clear of the field. Defending Champion Padraig Harrington was playing alongside Tiger and the good form rubbed off with the Irishman shooting a 68 to leave himself bang in contention.

In the second round Woods shot a good solid 70 to leave himself with a big four shot lead with Harrington slipping back to -3 after carding a disappointing 73 and it looked as though it was going to be another Tiger show. Ross Fisher of England joined Harrington on -3 after he shot 68 to continue his fine season in the Golf Majors.

In the third round Tiger played solid all day and followed up his 70 with a 71 although his four shot lead had been cut in half by the end Saturday. Harrington came storming back with 69 to put himself right back in contention and he was joined two off the lead by YE Yang from South Korea who shot a brilliant 67 as he searched for his first Major win.

The players arrived for the final round knowing that Tiger Woods had never lost a Major when he was winning the tournament after 54 holes, but one man in particular took no notice of this record to stun golf. Woods struggled with his putting during the final round and laboured his way to a 75 while YE Yang shot a -2 score of 70 to claim his maiden Major victory by a comfortable three shots in the end. Padraig Harrington was bang in contention until he scored a quintuple-bogey 8 on the Par 3 8th which ended his chances.
